Portable Wheelchair Ramps
Mobility challenged individuals often have difficulty in moving around on their own. Wheelchairs are a blessing for them as they let them move freely and be less dependent on others. But in certain situations even wheelchairs are not much of a help, for instance when stairs are encountered. This is where wheelchair ramps enter. Wheelchair ramps are inclined planes designed to make steps and curbs easily accessible for people on wheelchairs or people pushing carts or strollers.
Depending upon the main feature of the ramps, they can be classified into four different groups- fixed dimension ramps, longitudinally and horizontally folding ramps, and finally telescopic ramps, which are further divided into reverse profile ramps and “U” shaped gutter ramps.
Track wheelchair ramp is a design used in various ramps widely available these days in the marketplace. They line up with the wheelchair wheels and consist of a telescoping design which extends for use on steps, curbs, or vans. Made from anodized aluminum these ramps can be used with both electric and manual wheelchairs. Another design is the Threshold wheel ramp made from lightweight aluminum and suited for both outdoor and indoor use.
Modular ramps which consist of platforms, supports, flanges, wheels, integral landings, handrails, and self-contained leveling systems joined together by bolts and clamps can be designed for semi permanent or permanent installation. Custom made ramps are also made available by manufacturers to better suit the buyers needs.
The single fold ramps fold from the middle and are highly portable to carry around and can be set up easily; the multi fold ramps have additional advantage of extra length which helps to maneuver taller obstacles easily, they are folded multiple times and can be carried like a suitcase. Another design of portable wheelchair ramps are the Roll-up ramps which have hinges for easy folding and storage. The telescoping wheelchair ramps are multi-purpose ramps and can be used for variety of purposes and lengths.
There are special ramps built for making stowing of wheelchairs into vans easier. These ramps, known as van wheelchair ramps are lightweight yet they can take a weight of up to 800 pounds.
A good wheelchair ramp is essential in making life easier, getting the full use of the wheelchair, and accessing the otherwise inaccessible places.
